Betaine is an extract derived from beets, known for its role in balancing moisture within the skin and stimulating collagen production. It protects the skin from chemicals and environmental pollutants and helps inhibit allergic reactions.
Scientists have also discovered that deep-sea microorganisms use betaine to protect their cells from changes in the concentration of substances in the ocean, which can cause water to be drawn out of cells in a process called osmotic shock. This property helps protect the skin from environmental changes, such as shifts in humidity and temperature, which can disrupt skin balance and lead to moisture loss.
